One lineage descends from Wei Kangshu, ruler of Wei in the Spring and Autumn period. His descendants took the place name of Pu River as their surname, became known as Puyang, and later simplified it to the single surname Pu.
Another lineage descends from Emperor Shun. It lived by Pu River, now in Puyang, Henan, and later took the place name as the surname Pu.
