One tradition traces the surname to residents who adopted the place-name Puyang after Zhuanxu established his capital there; another derives it from the Ji clan, whose descendants of Duke Cheng of Wey adopted the name of the capital Puyang.
The Xing氏 Kaolüe records that the Puyang ancestors lived in Chanzhou, adopted the locality as their surname, and were associated with Guangping. The Tongzhi, Shizulüe records the Puyang clan in Chanzhou and Puyang Qian as a registrar in Waihuang during the Later Han.
Hall names include Boling, Pingling, Guangping, and Xiangwu. The first three derive from commandery affiliations, while Xiangwu commemorates Puyang Xing's appointment as chancellor of Eastern Wu.
Dongba Town in Gaochun, Nanjing, has three natural villages named Pujia, with more than a thousand residents bearing the compound surname Puyang.
