The Guoyu, in the section Lu Yu, records that Fangfeng was the ruler of the Wangmang people, guarded Mount Fengyu, and bore the surname Qi; the group was called Wangmang in the Yu, Xia, and Shang periods and Changdi in the Zhou period.
Recorded commanderies associated with the Qi surname include Caizhou, Puyang, Lu, Beihai, Nanchang, and Wukang; clan genealogies include the Mutzu Hall and Qingwang Hall.
In the Song period, the Qi surname was mainly distributed in Jiangxi; in the Ming period, mainly in Zhejiang and Hunan. Among contemporary registered users, the main areas are Jiangxi, Sichuan, Chongqing, Gansu, and Hunan.
Qidiao Kai was a man of Lu in the late Spring and Autumn period, or according to one account, of Cai. He was a disciple of Confucius and the founder of the Qidiao school of Confucianism; related records appear in the Shiji and the Kongzi Jiayu.
The generation-name verse recorded for the Qian-Shang branch includes, in sequence, Shi, Meng, Zan or Zhi, Jing-Bai-Yun, Gai-Yu-Song-Zi, Shou, Sheng, Chun, Ke, and Xiu-Ru, followed by names including Ru-Si-Guang-Qian and Yuan-Cheng-Xian-De.
