In ancient times, “Qiu” was written with two interchangeable forms. During the Han dynasty, some members of the Qiu surname began changing the form to “邱” to avoid Confucius’s personal name; in the third year of the Yongzheng reign, the court formally ordered the character to be changed by adding the “邑” component.
Before the Qin dynasty, the surname was mainly active in Shandong. During the Qin and Han dynasties, it moved south to the Jianghuai region; by the Song dynasty it was widely distributed across southern China, and it entered Taiwan in the early Qing period.
Qiu Chuji was a historical figure who traveled to Mongolia at the invitation of Genghis Khan.
