One line traces back to the office of Quanfu in the Western Zhou: descendants took Quan as their surname, and some later changed it to Quan because the two characters were homophonous. Another line arose from Tang-dynasty Quanji County, using the place name as a surname.
The Quan genealogy in the Jiqiting Collection records that the Quan surname derived from the Quan surname; the Clan Records sections of the Zheng Tongzhi and Xu Tongzhi both include Quan.
The recorded commanderies are Jingzhao and Qiantang. The halls are Suinan Hall and Qianhou Hall, both associated with the deeds and title of Quan Cong during the Three Kingdoms period.
During the Han dynasty, Quan ancestors mainly settled in Qiantang, Zhejiang, and by the Eastern Wu period they were distributed throughout Wu. During the Ming and Qing periods, some Korean Quan clanspeople moved back to the Central Plains, forming the main source of Korean Quan communities in the three northeastern provinces and in Hebei, Shandong, Henan and Shanxi.
Quan Rou was from Qiantang in the Eastern Han and served as a Right Vice Director of the Palace Library during Emperor Ling's reign; his son Quan Cong was a military commander of Eastern Wu. The Qing scholar Quan Zuwang was a notable philologist and Confucian scholar, author of Jiao Shui Jing Zhu and Jiqiting Collection.
