Ruan / Juan
Ruan is one of the Chinese surnames; its traditional method of surname formation was adopting a state name as the surname.
The main origin derives from the Yan surname: descendants of Gaotao were enfeoffed in the state of Ruan during the Shang dynasty. After King Wen of Zhou destroyed Ruan, its royal clan adopted the state name as their surname. The former territory of Ruan was around present-day Jingchuan, Gansu.
The Ruan surname originated in Jingchuan, Gansu, and gradually spread to Shaanxi, Henan, Shandong, Shanxi, and Hebei during the Zhou and Qin periods. A Ruan from the state of Lu is recorded for the Spring and Autumn period, and Ruan Wengzhong is recorded as a Qin person during the reign of Qin Shi Huang.
The principal commanderies are Taiyuan and Chenliu, and the principal lineage halls are Taiyuan, Chenliu, and Zhulin; other halls include Zhongxiao Hall.
During the late Han, Three Kingdoms, and Wei-Jin periods, the Ruan surname flourished in Chenliu Commandery. After the Yongjia turmoil, some Chenliu Ruan families moved south to areas including present-day Nanjing and Shaoxing, while one branch moved to Hepu, Guangxi. After the Northern and Southern Dynasties, branches settled in Anhui, Jiangxi, Hubei, and Hunan and also entered Vietnam.
Ruan Yu was an Eastern Han literary figure and one of the Jian'an Seven Scholars. Ruan Ji was a literary figure and thinker of Wei during the Three Kingdoms period; his nephew Ruan Xian was also one of the Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove, and the two were known as the “Elder and Younger Ruan.”
The generation-name sequence traditionally associated with the Ruan lineage of Nanan, Fujian, consists of thirty-two characters: “Mian Jin Cheng Zhang, Yang Hui Qi Xiang, Dun Ren Yao De, Ying Jun Xian Liang, Jing Lun Yong Ji, Da Yi You Chang, Ke Shao Fang Dian, Yi Shi Yong Chang.”
