One origin traces the surname to the Spring and Autumn-period state of Shi, also called Shi in the variant form 邿. After the state was annexed by Lu, its descendants adopted the state name as their surname.
The Xingzuan records that the Shi surname had its commandery origin in Hepu. A record cited from the Yuanhe Xingzuan states that Shi Suo, a person of the Han period, was from Zhu Yuan in Jiaozhi.
The Shi surname's commandery origin is Hepu, and 邿 is recorded as a variant form.
Presently recorded distribution includes Guanyang in Guangxi; Fengxin and Xiushui in Jiangxi; Xianghe in Hebei; Taiyuan in Shanxi; Fushun in Sichuan; Yunlin and Hualien in Taiwan; and Ningling in Henan.
