Shi / Shi
Shi (shì) is a rare Chinese surname. A 2013 study found that it was not among the 400 most common surnames in China.
The Shi surname originated from the Qi lineage through descendants of the Du clan and was derived from an official title. After Du Bo was killed under King Xuan of Zhou, his son Xi Shu fled to Jin and became a shishi; Xi Shu's son adopted the office as the surname.
Shi Hui received the fiefs of Sui and later Fan, and his descendants subsequently divided into the Shi, Fan, and Sui branches.
The ancestral commandery associated with the Shi surname is Hedong Commandery.
The Shi surname is found in Xi County in Henan, Yishui in Shandong, Gaiping in Liaoning, Keelung in Taiwan, and other places.
Two historical figures bore the name Shi Xie: Fan Wenzi, a son of Shi Hui who served as deputy commander of Jin's central army in the Spring and Autumn period, and Weiyan (137-226), a native of Guangxin in Cangwu active in the late Han and Three Kingdoms era.
