Besides the descendants of the Spring and Autumn Chu official Shen Shushi and the Zi- and Ying-surname origins, the surname also derives from descendants of the Warring States Qi figure Shizi, who used Shi from his name, and from Manchu people in the Qing period and present-day Manchu and Miao groups.

The Shi surname's commanderies are Chenliu, Longxi, and Julu; its hall names include Longxi, Renshu, and Julu.
In early periods, the Shi surname was concentrated mainly in Henan and Shandong. During the Wei, Jin, and Northern and Southern Dynasties, it flourished in Julu, while branches also developed around Kaifeng in Henan and Lintao in Gansu, later entering Jiangsu, Anhui, Hubei, Shaanxi, and Shanxi.
