Origin from a Priestly Office

One lineage traces to the Zi clan and to the liao priests who tended the sacrificial fires for Heaven in the late Shang and early Zhou periods. Their office supplied the surname 尞; 眘, 尞, 寮, and 遼 were historically interchangeable, with 了 treated as their abbreviated form.

Surname Change Among Niu Jin's Descendants

Another lineage traces to the Zi clan and descendants of Niu Fu, an aristocratic official of Song. After the Cao Wei general Niu Jin was poisoned by Sima Yi, his family fled and adopted 尞 from the ancestral name Yi Liao. Although Liao Yun was later restored to the surname Niu, collateral descendants retained 尞, abbreviated it to 了, and regarded Longxi as their commandery of origin.
