The Yiqi surname is traced to the Ji lineage, with Yao as its founding ancestor; it is dated to about 2225 BCE and originated at Mount Yiqi in present-day Shunping County, Baoding, Hebei.

Tradition holds that Yao was born at Mount Yiqi and therefore took Yiqi as his surname. The mountain was west of modern Wan County in Hebei, where the Qi River rises, and was also called Mount Yao.
