One tradition traces the surname to the late Shang period as a surname derived from an official post. “Dian” was listed among the outer-service offices, and the official was responsible for reclaiming wasteland for the Shang king.

Chaoshan Migration and Ancestral Hall
According to tradition, the Chaoshan Dian clan moved from the Central Plains to Putian, Fujian, in the early Ming period and later entered Chaoshan. Cao’an in Fuyang Town, Chao’an, has the Dian Clan Grand Ancestral Hall, where ancestor rites are held on the fifteenth day of the eleventh lunar month.

Geographic Distribution
The surname is found in Songzi and Enshi in Hubei; Zhuji and Shangyu in Zhejiang; Wujin in Jiangsu; Tainan and Taipei in Taiwan; and Chaozhou, Jieyang, Shantou, and Shanwei in Guangdong. In Guangdong, it is concentrated mainly in the Chaoshan region.

Dian Jiemei
Dian Jiemei (1887–1969) was a Chaozhou calligrapher and painter who worked as a teacher. He was skilled in calligraphy, painting, poetry, prose, and seal carving, and was especially noted for clerical-script calligraphy. Some of his works are held by museums in Shantou and Chaozhou.
