The 佟 groups mainly originated in Huanren and Xinbin in Liaodong. During the Ming and Later Jin periods they were distributed along the lower Heilongjiang, Jilin, and the Hun River region of Liaoning; after the Qing entered China proper, they spread nationwide, while remaining concentrated in the three northeastern provinces.

Historical Figures

Tong Wan was a Liaodong figure of the Northern Yan period, known for his writings. Tong Yangxing was from Kaiyuan in the late Ming; after joining Later Jin, he took part in the capture of Shenyang and Liaoyang and oversaw the casting of red-coat cannons.
