The surname 俸 is pronounced fèng. It is currently uncommon, found among the Han, Dai, and Yao peoples, and distributed in places including Taiyuan in Shanxi, Xinhui in Guangdong, several areas of Guangxi, Jinggu in Yunnan, and Nanjiang in Sichuan.
One account traces the surname to the large-scale migration of peoples in southwestern China at the end of the Warring States period. The ancient Yue people used “俸 (奉)” as a designation for their group, which later gradually developed into a surname.
The surname is recorded in 《姓氏考略》, which cites 《姓氏寻源》 as stating that it is the surname 奉 with the “person” radical added. 《姓氏词典》 cites 《古今姓氏书辨证》 as stating that the surname existed in recent times.
The recorded commanderies and regional seat are Guanghan, Yuzhang, and Wuzhou. The ancestral halls are Guanghan Hall, also called Hanzhou Hall; Yuzhang Hall, also called Nanchang Hall; and Wuzhou Hall, also called Cangwu, Xin Guang, or Guangxin Hall.
The surname later developed three main lines in Lincang of Yunnan, Guilin of Guangxi, and Anyue and Guanghan of Sichuan. Today it is relatively concentrated in northeastern Guangxi, the Lancang River basin of Yunnan, and northeastern Sichuan.
