Origins

Descendants of Dongguan Officials

One lineage is traditionally traced to descendants of officials who held the Dongguan office. In the Zhou period, the Sikong was called Dongguan and oversaw engineering and production; descendants adopted the office title as the surname Dong.

Descendants of Dong Feng

One lineage derives from Dong Feng, a local ruler of Suqi among the southwestern peoples during Shu Han. After his descendants and clanspeople submitted to Shu Han, some adopted the ancestor's name as the sinicized surname Dong.

Song Official-Title Origin

In 1176, the third year of the Chunxi era under Emperor Xiaozong of Song, the office of Dongguan Dafu was established under the Bureau of Astronomy. Some descendants of its holders adopted the official title as the surname Dong.

Adoption by the Donggor Clan

The Donggor clan was associated with the Khorchin Mongols in the Ming period and was later also adopted by Manchus. From the mid-Qing period onward, many Mongol and Manchu members of the clan took Dong as their Han Chinese surname.
