Mongol Origins

Mongol-origin Ha families include the Durha and Urona branches. The former lived in Qaraqin and adopted Ha as a Han surname in the late Yuan and early Ming; the latter lived by the Tula River and adopted Ha during the Ming.

Hui Origins

Hui Ha is one of the thirteen prominent Hui surnames. It originated in a royal family of Bukhara in Central Asia during the Yuan and Ming periods; descendants of Hasan, the second son of Sayyid Shams al-Din Umar, adopted Ha from his ancestral name.

Jurchen and Manchu Origins

Members of the Jurchen Hada tribe lived by the Hada River and adopted the homophonous Han character Ha from the river's name. After the Hada tribe was annexed by Nurhaci, its Ha families became Manchu Ha families. Manchu Hālcha, Harla, and Haltala branches also adopted Ha.
