The origin of the Han Chinese Tu surname is unknown. Among the Manchu, the Tu surname was adopted by people from the Tujia, Tuerjia, and Sitala clans.

Another Origin Record

The Dictionary Supplement records that the Tu surname descended from the Fotu clan and was later changed to Tu. Among the Manchu Eight Banners, descendants of the Sitala, Tuerjia, and Tujia clans also adopted Tu as their surname.
