Surname Overview

Surname Status and Readings

Chu (處/处) is recorded as a rare surname in Chinese surname reference works. The cited Zheng Tongzhi and other dictionaries give the reading chǔ, while Zhongguo Xingshi Daquan separately records chù, so the cited references disagree on pronunciation.

Origins

Mongol Sinicized-Surname Branch

According to the page’s account of Qingchao Tongzhi, the Mongol Sarchut clan was also called Sartuk or Sarduk. After the mid-Qing period, some members adopted Chu as a Han-style surname. This is a Mongol surname-conversion branch and should not be presumed to share ancestry with other identically written Chu lineages.

Historical Records

Reported Textual Attestations

Through Xingshi Kaolue, the page quotes Fengsu Tong as saying that the Han-era Beihai governor Chu Xing was possibly a descendant of Chuzi. It also quotes Lushi for a Chu lineage descended from Boyi and for the commandery affiliations of Yingchuan and Peiguo. These are secondary quotations on the supplied page, not direct verification of the original works.
