Secretariat Office Origin

One lineage is traced to the Eastern Han Secretariat Director's responsibility for confidential affairs. Descendants adopted the occupational designation Mi'ao and later shortened it to Ao.

Xiongnu, Jurchen, and Mongol Origins

Some Ao lineages are recorded as descending from the Xiongnu king Aojian, while others arose when the Jurchen Aotun surname or the Yuan-era Mongol Aolu surname was changed to Ao.

In the Qing dynasty, Ao Qiqian of Fuping served at the Baiju salt office under the Lianghuai Salt Administration, while Ao Kezhao served as a clerk in Gao County.
