Origin from a Place Name
The webpage, quoting the Surname Textual Research, says that the surname was derived from a place. Quoting Kunxue Jiwen, it says that Ping was a Jin settlement where Kuo, son of Zhao Cui, received an appanage and was called Ping Kuo, also known as Ping Xiu.
Recorded Lineage Attribution
Based on the place-name origin described above, the source records the surname as descending from the Ying surname. It also preserves the view that it came from the Zhao lineage and notes that Zhao also belonged to Ying.
Legend of an Ancient State
The source records another account: it is traditionally said that an ancient state of Ping existed as a feudal lord in the time of the Yan Emperor, and that the surname was derived from the state. The account is explicitly marked as traditional and cites Xing Kao; it should not be treated as verified history.
Another Traditional Origin
The source also says that, according to tradition, the surname descended from Zaofu, an ancient skilled charioteer, citing Xing Kao. It does not state how this account was verified or how it relates to the other origin accounts.
