The Yanling surname derives from the Ji surname. In the Spring and Autumn period, Zha, the younger son of the King of Wu, held Yanling as his fief, and later generations took the place name as their surname.

The Zheng Tongzhi: Shizulue records the Yanling surname, stating that Wu Jizha lived in Yanling and thereby acquired the surname; it also calls it Yanzhoulai.
