Chile originated from a tribal confederation south of the Beihai and north of the Duluo River. It lived there as early as the third century BCE and was known by names including Dingling, Dili, Tiele, Tieli, and Chili; Chile was another translation of Dingling.

Formation of the Surname

Some members adopted the tribe as their surname and became known as the Chile clan; the surname was also shortened to “Chi.” The Northern Wei called the group the Gaoche tribe.
