The earliest recorded mention of the Jiao surname is in the Ming dynasty work Wanxing Tongpu. It is also included in Xu Tongzhi: Shizu Lue, while Xing shi kao lue cites a note from Qianfulun saying that descendants of Wei Zi of Song bore the surname Jiao. Another surname text states that its origin is unknown.

One Jiao lineage uses the generation sequence “Guang De Wen Zhang Fu Chuan Zhong (Zong) Ji (Ji) Ke Chang Sheng Cun Huai Yu Tai Yuan Shao Bao Ming Tang.” A woodblock movable-type genealogy from the late Qing is held by Jiao Zhongben in Sanda​ohe Village, Simenzi, Fengcheng, Liaoning.
