Origins

Duolu Yi and Western Xia origins

The Xing shi kao lüe, drawing on the History of Song, records 旺 as a surname of the Duolu Yi, whose territory was in present-day Gansu. Drawing on the History of Liao, it also records 旺 as a Western Xia surname and identifies it as Qiang because Western Xia was founded by the Qiangic Tangut people.

Naxi origin

Among the Naxi, the 旺 surname derives from the E'er clan name, which originally functioned as a household name; some later adopted the single-character surname 旺. The Naxi Lamu household originally belonged to the E'er household and later changed its surname to 旺.
