Origins

Ji Clan Origin Tradition

One tradition traces the surname to the Ji clan. At the end of the Qin, after the Qin erudite Ji Zhen was killed, his younger brother Sui assigned surnames based on the sounds of Ji Zhen's name to four sons to avoid danger; the second son, 昋突, moved to Zhuxu in Jinan.

Research Notes

Differences Among Origin Accounts

The Guangyun says that the four sons of a man killed in the late Han adopted different surnames, with one son taking 昋 after fleeing to Xuzhou. The Jiyun, quoting the Jiong Genealogy, instead says that the Qin erudite Gui Zhen changed his surname to 昋 because of the burying of scholars. The two accounts differ in person, period, and circumstances.
