The recorded origins of the Yue surname include descendants of the ancient officials responsible for the evening moon sacrifice, a Xiongnu surname, a Mongolian surname of the Jin and Yuan periods, and the surname among Indigenous people of Taiwan and the Xibe people of Xinjiang.
The Xuxiu Tongzhi, section on clans, records the Yue surname under the entering-tone category. The Dictionary of Surnames states that its earliest record appears in the Bogutu, which mentions the Zhou-period vessel Yueji zun and the Yue Luji ding.
The southern Jiangxi Yue lineage is distributed in Hongyan and Maxiangzi in Longnan County and Shaodou Village in Quannan. During the Kangxi period of the Qing dynasty, four brothers of the Shaodou branch moved to Xiaogan, Hubei, and later to Zhulinwan in Dengzhan Village, Heliu Town, Linshui, Sichuan; the Linshui Yue lineage has since spread across more than ten townships.
Yue Yanming was a Taizhou registrar during the Yu统 period of the Yuan dynasty and was the first to establish a Confucius temple. Yue Wenxian, a native of Baxian in the Ming dynasty, served as an instructor in Wuchang and was known for his poetry. During the Yuan dynasty, Yue Naihe later changed his name to Ma Zuchang.
The Ganzhou Yue genealogy records Yue Kuocha'er as the founding ancestor, followed by Guizhong and Shizhong. Shizhong's descendants were Bingwen and Bingwu; Bingwu's branches, represented by Yue Hua and Yue Ying, settled respectively in Hongyan Village and Maxiangzi in Longnan County, while Yue Ying's branch later moved to Shaodou Village in Quannan County.
