Main Origins

One branch of the Lang surname took its surname from Langzhou, whose former seat was in present-day Changde, Hunan; another account holds that some branches changed the surname from Lang.

Other Ethnic Origins

The records list Lang families in the Manchu Plain Red Banner. Descendants of the Mongolian Malangga and Ulanghat clans adopted Lang as a Han surname, and Lang families are also found among the Dai and Jingpo peoples.

The surname is recorded in the Xu Tongzhi: Shizu Lue and first appears in the Xingyuan. The Xing shi kaolüe states: “The surname was taken from Langzhou; some may also have changed from the Lang surname.”

Migration and Distribution

Village Migration Record

During the Qianlong period of the Qing dynasty, the Lang surname moved to a site about one kilometer east of present-day Nanwoluozi Village in Jimo, Shandong, to guard the hills. The place later became known as Zhu Family Hermitage because the Zhu surname became predominant.
