Rǎn Surname

Surname profile

Rǎn / Jan

EN日本語

Origins

Ji Lineage Tradition

One tradition traces the surname to the Ji clan and identifies King Wen of Zhou's son Jizai as its progenitor. After Jizai was enfeoffed in the state of Dan, his descendants adopted Dan as their surname; removing its ear radical produced Ran, which was also written as 染 because 染 and 冉 are homophones.

Historical Records

Early Attestation and Uncertain Accounts

The earliest stated record of the surname is in the Tang-dynasty Yuanhe Xingzuan. The claim that the ancestors of Shudai Gan of Jin bore the surname Ran and that their descendants changed it to 染 remains doubtful because the Zuozhuan contains no such person and the proposed identity and surname relationships do not align.

In the early Ming period, members of the Ran surname from Pingyang Prefecture, Hongdong County, Zhaocheng County, and nearby places assembled at the Hongdong Great Pagoda Tree for relocation. By the late Qing, their descendants were distributed across Henan, Shandong, Hebei, Beijing, Anhui, Jiangsu, and Shanxi.
