One branch descended from Jie Ni, a person of Chu in the Spring and Autumn period. Another arose from Jie Long, Marquis of Xiangcheng in the Han dynasty, a Xiongnu chancellor who surrendered and received a fief; his descendants adopted his name as their surname.
Zheng Qiao recorded Jie Ni as an ancient recluse and stated that Confucius once sent Zilu to ask him for directions. Xing shi kao lüe, based on the Han Shu: Table of Meritorious Officials, recorded Jie Long as a Xiongnu chancellor who surrendered and received a fief.
