The Xing Shi Kao Lue, quoting the Lu Shi, records that descendants of Cao prince Xin Shi, styled Zi Zang, became Xin, and that descendants of Cai Zhong also became Xin. The Zheng Tongzhi, Clan Records, additionally records Xihe as a commandery of prominence and mentions Xin Biao.

The Xin surname is distributed in Nenjiang in Heilongjiang, Yutai in Shandong, Yuyao in Zhejiang, and Taiyuan, Changzhi, and Linfen in Shanxi. It is also found in Laoting, Linze, Huainan, Chishui, Gaochun, Wujin, Jinhu, Tianchang, Gaoyou, Ningbo, Jiangshan, and Beijing.
