Origins
Derived from the Compound Surname Pencheng
During the Warring States period, the son of Pencheng Kuo changed the compound surname Pencheng to Pen while fleeing danger; others changed it to Cheng, giving rise to the saying that Pen and Cheng share one family origin.
Surname Derived from a Qi Settlement
Pen was the name of a settlement in the state of Qi during the Spring and Autumn period, and the descendants of Penchengzi adopted the settlement name as their surname.
Guangxi Yao Lineage
A branch in Guanyang, Guangxi, belongs to the Yao people. Its progenitor, Pan Gengshanlang, moved from Jiangxi to Guanyang during the Hongwu era of the Ming dynasty. Because clan rules prohibited marriage between people of the same surname, Pan was changed to Pen, and the branch settled at Dapingtun, Tangweidi, and other places in Jiangtang Village, Shuiche Township.
