Origins

Ji-Surname Origin Tradition

One tradition traces the surname to Ji, identifying its bearers as descendants of Beigong Xuan, a descendant of the Yellow Emperor, who took their surname from an ancestor's name. After the fiefdoms of his descendants were destroyed, they moved into the Qi state and settled around present-day Qingzhou, Shandong.

Another tradition holds that the surname was bestowed by Emperor Guangwu of the Eastern Han. Its founding ancestor was Chunwang, a deputy general who accompanied Ma Yuan on the southern campaign to Jiaozhi; this branch is pronounced qiān.
