The Diwǔ surname descends from the royal clan of Tian Qi. After Emperor Gaozu of Han founded the Han dynasty, the Tian Qi royal clan was divided and relocated into eight branches numbered from First to Eighth; descendants adopted the branch number as their surname, with Diwǔ being one branch.
