Origins

Four traditions are listed: descendants of Chengshu, son of King Wen of Zhou, or of the Zhou official Cheng Su Gong, adopted the surname from a posthumous title; Zhongkan of the Eight Yuan received the posthumous name Su; descendants of the Sushen changed their surname to Su after assimilating into China; and the surname was also said to share origins with Xiao as an old Shang lineage.

Historical figures include Su Xiang, governor of Yanmen during the Han; Su Hao, a Gui善 native, Yongle-period provincial examination graduate, and instructor during the Ming; and Su Chun, military administrator of Ji Zhou during the Baoli era of the Song.
