Cāngshū / Ts'ang-shu
The Cangshu surname was not included in the old Chinese Hundred Family Surnames. It is a very ancient surname group that no longer exists as such, with many branches simplified into the single surnames Cang and Shu.
The Cangshu surname is said to originate from the Ji surname and descend from Cangshu, a subordinate of the ancient Emperor Zhuanxu; it was formed from an ancestor's name.
The Lushi records: “Among the descendants of Emperor Zhuan was the Cangshu clan.”
Many members of the clan used Chenliu and Henei as their commanderies of origin.
Cangshu was one of the eight talented men of the Zhuanxu period and ranked first among the “Eight Kai.”
Among the descendants of Cangshu, some adopted the ancestor's name as their surname. It was later abbreviated and divided into the single surnames Cang and Shu, passed down through generations.
