Origins

Ancient Polity Theory

The source states that Wan was a polity during the reign of Yin King Wu Ding. It reports Ding Shan’s考证 identifying it with the Hunyi or Chuanyi of the Zhou period, and says that Chuanyi was an enemy state of Zhou in King Wen’s time, located near Weina. The passage itself does not directly explain how this became a later surname.
