A Tang-Dynasty Surname Change

After Wu Zetian suppressed the uprisings of Tang imperial relatives including Prince Yue Zhen and Prince Langya Chong, their membership in the imperial clan was removed and their surname was changed to “虺.”

Documentary Attestations

The Qianfu Lun records that the Hui clan all belonged to the Zi lineage; the Tang Shu, in the Basic Annals of Empress Wu Zetian, also records that Prince Yue Zhen and Prince Langya Chong were assigned the surname Hui.
