Three principal traditions concern the jiàn branch: Jiang-lineage residents near Mount Daxian took the place name as 岘 and later removed the mountain radical; residents by the Xian River used 涀 and later removed the water radical; and people named for the weapon 鋧 and its military function later removed the metal radical.
During the large-scale migrations of the Qing period, six Jian branches moved away: two went to Shaanxi and four to Taihe, Anhui. Present locations include Fuyang in Anhui, Huantai in Shandong, Guilin in Guangxi, and Taiwan.

Jian Qunli, born in 1952 in Huantai, Shandong, was a metallurgical engineer who worked in blast-furnace design for more than twenty years. He participated in 100, 220, and 300 cubic-meter furnace projects and helped advance the use of bag-filter dust removal for blast-furnace gas.
One tradition identifies the Jian lineage of Huantai, Shandong, as descendants of the Ming Jingtai Emperor Zhu Qiyu. To escape political danger, they reportedly followed the generational sequence “Bao Zhen Yong Qi” and changed Zhu-Jian to Jian. The senior direct branch lived in Xingwang Village, Tangshan Town, Huantai, and its genealogy sequence has been used to investigate this lineage.
The surname 見 is rare. Entries record both jiàn and xiàn and describe them as later becoming distinct lineages. The jiàn branch is included in Zheng Qiao's Tongzhi: Clan Survey and first appears in Xing Yuan.
