The Jue surname originated among the Manchu, from the ancient Jurchen Juechan tribal group, and was formed by sinicizing the tribal name.
Surname Transformation
After the mid-Qing period, the Juechan clan adopted the Chinese single-character surname Jiao from the original meaning “training ground”; some also changed to the Chinese surname Jue.

Classical Record
The Qing Dynasty General Gazetteer: Genealogies of the Manchu Eight Banners records that the Manchu Juechan clan was also called Juecha, with the Manchu name Giocan Hala, meaning “training ground.”
Other Origin Record
The surname records also state that Jue is a Wa ethnic surname; the four sons of the original Yamu clan divided into four surnames, one of which was Jue.
