Three Origins

The surname has three origin branches: one came from the Gar family of Tubo and was sinicized from an official title; one came from the Tang-period prefecture of Lונchuan and was based on a place name; and one came from the Jin-period office of Guolun and was later sinicized as the single surname Lun.

Documentary Attestations

The Zheng Tongzhi: Shizu Lue records it as a prominent Tubo surname and names Lun Qinling as the son of Lu Dongzan. The Xing shi kao lüe also cites the Xiqin lu for General Lun Shuda and the Tang shu for the use of “Lun” as the title of a Tubo chancellor.
