Three Origins

The surname has three recorded origins: the Ji lineage associated with a Warring States-era Wu official receiving a reward; a Tangut lineage from the Western Xia imperial surname Tuoba; and a Yi lineage from the Yue Shang clan of the Yi peoples in Yizhou during the Western Han period.

The Mingxian shizu yanxing leigao, quoting the Xingyuan, records: “Shang was one of the eight clans of Wu; Jin had Shang Qing.” Sun Wu of the Three Kingdoms had Shang Lin, and the late Jin and Southern Dynasties had Shang Qing.

Migration and Distribution

After the fall of Western Xia, Shang clanspeople moved south and settled across the Central Plain and Jiangnan, gradually becoming sinicized. The surname is now found in Songjiang in Shanghai, Qiubei in Yunnan, Yifeng in Jiangxi, and Yangquan and Linfen in Shanxi.

Historical Figures

Shang Lin was an official of the Sun Wu regime in charge of the chief clerk of Gouzhang during the Three Kingdoms period. Shang Qing was a staff member of the Jiangdong government in the late Jin and Southern Dynasties, and is also recorded as a Jin-period commentator on the Zhouyi.
