Zào / Tsao
Tradition holds that the Zao surname descended from Zaofu, a noted minister of King Mu of Zhou. Zaofu was renowned for chariot driving and horse breeding and helped suppress the rebellion of King Yan of Xu; some of his descendants adopted his given name as their surname.
Tradition also records bearers of the Zao surname among the ancient Western Qiang, whose lineage is regarded as having a separate origin.
Historically, the Zao surname formed commandery associations including Jingzhao.
Today, the Zao surname is found mainly in Sichuan, Jiangsu, Beijing, and other provincial-level regions.
