Overview of the Yu Surname
After the state of Yu was destroyed, its people took the state name as their surname. The character later changed to 于 after relocation, forming the origin of the 于 surname; today, the 于 surname generally recognizes Yu Shu as its founding ancestor.

Origins
The Shang-Dynasty State of Yu
During the reign of Shang King Wuding, after defeating the state of Meng, the Shang court granted part of its territory to the king's son and established the Zi-surname state of Yu in the area of present-day Qinyang, Henan.

The Ji-Surname State in Texts
The New Book of Tang records that after King Wu of Zhou pacified the realm, he enfeoffed his second son at the former site of the Shang state of Yu, establishing a Ji-surname state called Yu Shu.

Spring and Autumn Records
The Shangshu Dazhuan records that King Wen of Zhou began attacking Yu in the second year of his reign. The Zuo Zhuan records that in 712 BCE King Huan of Zhou took Yu's land from Zheng.

Migration and Destruction of the State
In the late Shang period, the state of Yu moved to the area of present-day Qinxian, Changzhi, Shanxi. After King Wen of Zhou attacked it, the Marquis of Yu was relocated to Di. In the early Spring and Autumn period, the territory of Yu was taken from Zheng by King Huan of Zhou, indicating that Zheng had annexed the state.

Notable People
Yu Shu
Yu Shu was later regarded as a worthy ruler; under his governance, state affairs were orderly and the people lived in stability. The former site of the state of Yu is said to remain in Yutai Village, Xifang Town, Qinyang, Henan.
