Origin in a Song Settlement
One account holds that the He surname arose from a place name. He was a settlement of Song in the Spring and Autumn period; Xiang Shu, grandson of Duke Huan of Song, received He as his fief and later took the settlement as his surname, belonging to the Zi lineage.
Northern Wei Surname Change
Another account, found in the Wei Shu, Officials and Clans section, states that during the Northern Wei period the Da Mogan clan changed its surname to He.
The He and Heyang Account
Another account identifies the He surname with the He surname and derives it from a place name; He may have been Heyang, a settlement of Wei during the Warring States period, whose former city was in present-day Heyang, Shaanxi.
