Origins
Descent from the Ji-ruled State of Xun
The Xun surname originated from the Ji lineage. Ji Pu, the seventeenth son of King Wen of Zhou, was enfeoffed at Xun and established the State of Xun. After that state was destroyed by Duke Wu of Jin in the early Spring and Autumn period, his descendants adopted its name as their surname.

Pingyang Commandery
The ancestral commandery associated with the Xun surname is Pingyang, roughly corresponding to the Fen River basin south of present-day Huo County in Shanxi and areas to its west. Before the Sui dynasty its administrative seat lay southwest of present-day Linfen; from the Sui onward it was at present-day Linfen.

From the Spring and Autumn period through the Tang and Song dynasties, most Xun ancestors lived in present-day Shanxi and Shaanxi, especially central and southern Shanxi. After the Yuan and Ming dynasties, substantial migration occurred toward northeastern Henan, central and northern Jiangsu, central and western Shandong, Shaanxi, and Gansu.

The Qingzhou Xun Genealogy records that in 1449 the four brothers Gang, Ling, Zhen, and Duo moved south from Zaoqiang County in Northern Zhili to Qingzhou Prefecture in Shandong because of war. Duo remained there, and his descendants developed into twenty-four branches.
