The Li surname is currently uncommon. It is found in Qingyuan and Gaixian in Liaoning, Hancheng in Shaanxi, and Taiyuan, Lüliang, and Yanbei in Shanxi, as well as in Fenyang, Shangyu, Jiangshan, Zhongjiang, Xintai, Yongchang, Taoyuan, Taipei, Kaohsiung, Beijing, Lixin, and Haicheng.
One branch of the Li surname was originally the Li surname and changed to Li during the Spring and Autumn period. Those who later settled in Xiangcheng became the Xiangli surname. The former city of Xiangcheng was 15 li east of present-day Luyi.
Two other origins are given for the Li surname. One connects it with Lijia River, a settlement of Jianzhou Jurchens in the Ming period, where “Lijia” means “sticky” in Manchu. The other holds that the original surname was Sakda and that descendants adopted Li to commemorate Lifuha.

Li Ke was a grandee under Duke Xian of Jin in the Spring and Autumn period. Xiangli Jin, style name Fengjin, was from Bingzhou and served Later Tang, holding the offices of governor of Xinzhou, defender of Longzhou, and military commissioner of Baoyi; he died in the fifth year of Tianfu and was posthumously granted the title Grand Preceptor.
