Descent from Chongli and an Official-Title Origin

The surname is recorded as descending from Chongli, a descendant of Emperor Zhuanxu. Another account says that under Shaohao, Chong served as Nanzheng in charge of heavenly affairs and Li as Beizheng in charge of earthly affairs, with the official title later becoming a surname.

The Chongqiu Line

Another line is recorded through the Chongqiu clan, descended from Cao Shu Dianbo in the Spring and Autumn period. Chongqiu was a settlement of Cao, northeast of present-day Heze, Shandong, and descendants of the Chongqiu clan adopted the surname Chong.
