The recorded origin accounts include a Zhou-period palace gatekeeper responsible for stopping and closing doors, called ge, whose title later became a surname; descendants of the Nanzhao king Geluofeng may also have adopted Ge; and the Song offices of Ge duwei and Gemen shi may have generated the surname.

Documentary Attestations

The Zheng Tongzhi, in its Genealogical Clans section, records the Ge surname and mentions Ge Funu, a Tang deputy official of Qiaokou Town in Tanzhou; Ge Funu said that his ancestral origin was in Hebei.

The Ge surname is found in Songjiang of Shanghai, Wuqing of Tianjin, Jingxian and Xinji of Hebei, Yutai and Pingdu of Shandong, Taiyuan of Shanxi, and Laohekou of Hubei; it is also recorded in Laoting of Hebei, Zhongxiang of Hubei, and Yilan, Taiwan.

In the Tang dynasty, Ge Funu served as deputy official of Qiaokou Town in Tanzhou; in the Song dynasty, Ge Zhi served as magistrate of Qushan County in Haizhou, Huai dong Circuit.
