Origins

Main Origins

One line is traced to Min Sun of Lu in the Spring and Autumn period, whose courtesy name was Ziqian; his grandson adopted the grandfather’s personal name as a surname. Another account traces it to the Western Zhou office of qianren, later shortened to the single surname Qian.

Historical Records

Documentary Records and Figures

The Fengsu Tong records that the surname descended from Min Ziqian, a disciple of Confucius, and used the grandfather’s personal name as the surname. The Tangshu’s Genealogical Tables of Chancellors similarly records Min Sun, styled Ziqian, and his grandson Wen. Recorded figures include Qian Bao of the Han, Qian Weidao of the Tang, Qian Sheng of the Ming, and Qian Wen of the Qing.

The history of Qianwang Village in Huxian records that a Qian-surnamed scholar from Jinling settled there during the Wanli period of the Ming dynasty.

Research Notes

Orthographic and Historical Boundaries

After the 1954 character simplification reform, some Qian-surname households had the surname recorded as “千”. The relevant account explicitly states that the surnames “骞” and “千” have no historical connection, and records later erroneous forms written as “蹇” and “鶱”.
