The Surname Suo ranks 273rd in the Hundred Family Surnames and was outside the top 300 in the 2007 national surname population ranking.
One origin of the Suo surname is the Zi surname: King Di Jia of Shang enfeoffed his son Dan at Jing suo. The state of Suo was destroyed by Zhou at the end of the Shang period, and one of the six Yin clans assigned by the Duke of Zhou to Lu was the Suo clan.
The Yuanhe Xingzuan records the Suo clan as one of the seven major clans of the Yin-Shang period, with later eminent branches originating in Dunhuang and Wuwei.
The Suo surname’s commanderies include Dunhuang, Wucheng, Wuwei, and Fengyi. Its hall names include Wucheng, Wuwei, Dunhuang, and Fengyi, as well as Qiusuo and Wulong.
The earliest activity of the Suo surname was in present-day Shandong and Henan. During the Jin and Northern and Southern Dynasties, it formed an eminent lineage in Wuwei Commandery; after the Song dynasty, it spread across Hebei, Inner Mongolia, the Northeast, Hubei, Hunan, and other regions.
Suo Jing, styled You'an, was from Dunhuang and served as a Jin dynasty general and calligrapher. He excelled at cursive script, and his work Zhang Shuzhuang has been transmitted.
